Keep These Tips in Mind When You are Upgrading Your Refurbished Sun Server to Avoid Problems

13th Apr 2014

By following certain practices, you can avoid problems and gain peak efficiency when you upgrade your server. Server upgrades require careful planning; here are several things to keep in mind when upgrading to ensure minimal problems.

You want to always start with a verified data backup. That is, never make changes to a server before you have confirmed that a verified data backup exists. When you power down your server, there is no guarantee it will come back online. There is a slim chance that when you shutdown to install a security patch, the server may fail to restart.

While it is important to minimize server restarts, it is not a good idea to complete multiple upgrades all in a single shutdown. Server tasks should be performed separately because if something goes wrong over the next few days, it is easier to pinpoint the problem. That is, it is easier to isolate the problem responsible for the error when only one change is introduced at a time.

Following your server upgrade, never assume all is well because you received no displaying errors. It is a good idea to monitor all error reports, file logs and other critical events to ensure all are performing as intended.

You need to follow up on any upgrades that require software adjustments. Just adding memory to your Windows server doesn’t necessarily optimize the performance. You need to update the servers virtual memory settings in order to optimize the operations.
