The Many Purposes of Servers Part II

Posted by ServerWorlds on 5th Aug 2016

In a recent blog, we began our list of server uses. We mentioned that servers can be used to hold and transfer email messages, they can run web applications and store data for those applications, they can store database information, and they can operate printer networks. Today, we’re going to continue that list by describing the purpose of servers as their integrated into the framework for websites and games. Here are a couple more server uses, as provided by ServerWorlds, your source for refurbished server and computer components.

Web Servers

Websites rely on servers to run. A server is required to store the coding that runs the website. This coding runs the website and includes menu functions, linking, buttons, and other design features. Servers also store any media files and content on the website, including images, videos, audio clips, and other information. All websites are hosted on a server or several servers. When a client accesses the website, their computer exchanges information with the server system. In this way, they can navigate through a website as their computer communicates with the server.

Game Servers

Online games run on servers. Multiplayer games that are accessed through a network depend on a server to communicate information to all of the participants. Gaming consoles themselves may act as a server for multiplayer games. In these instances, a “host” player hosts the connectivity of the network through their server, or game console. Distant players feed information through the network server, and that information is simultaneously relayed to other players’ personal gaming computers. Third party servers can also be utilized to host games, store game information, and perform other server functions.

In short, servers serve all sorts of purposes. They can be utilized to store information for websites and to exchange information with client computers. Gamers can use them to play multiplayer games through hosting servers, or through their own game console. Beyond that, as we mentioned in a previous article, there are mail servers, applications servers, database servers, and printer servers that each perform their own dedicated functionalities.
